Description
In collaboration with the Division of Institutional Equity and the Culture Builders initiative, this book chapter discussion will focus on Chapter 2 of Dr. Kari Grain’s book Critical Hope: How to Grapple with Complexity, Lead with Purpose, and Cultivate Transformative Social Change (North Atlantic Books, 2022). Chapter 2 introduces seven principles for practicing critical hope, which as Dr. Grain notes must problematize hope, involve critical reflection, and be committed to actionable change. Engaging hopefulness in a critical way, requires individuals and communities to engage in emotional, political and experiential aspects of an issue. After grappling with the ideas in this chapter, the discussion may turn toward applying these ideas to our own teaching and work with students.
This discussion is co-sponsored by the Faculty Development Center and the Division or Institutional Equity. This discussion will be facilitated by Tory Williams, a member of the Culture Builders cohort.
